nyc day 9: fire
today is my second to last day working for ASM.
This morning was typical. I woke up, opened my work laptop, and started today's tasks. BZZZ BZZZ. My phone rings from a 714 area code in Anaheim. "Hello?"
"Hey this is Lori, do you know how many hours you're going to be working today and tomorrow? I'm writing your last check."
"Hey Lori, yes but I think I'm going to be extending my termination date to the start of July."
Hang up, contact my boss Marcos and Agnes and ask about my extension. Lori messages again, I'm still waiting. I finally get a call from Scott, my director, who says "I wish you would have said this last week but it's too soon to extend and go through that process again. I wish we could keep you Jacob but we'll stick with the end date on Wednesday.
So come Wednesday, I will be officially unemployed! I will be going two months without a paycheck as I start my new job July 19th. Honestly, I thought it would take a lot longer to find a place and thought I wanted a vacation, but since coming to New York, I've been so money conscious.
But that's all good. I have savings for a reason and can explore NYC as well as other endeavors like potentially turning my blogs into vlogs! I work throughout the day and leave the apartment to pick up the box to ship my work laptop back to the company.
As I walk out, BOOM. I start tearing up. Was I sad? No. There's a shroud of grey covering the air that slightly burns my eyes. The air is filled with smoke and breathing is unpleasant. We're we bombed?
Turns out there are over 414 wildfires in Eastern Canada and the wind is picking up all the smoke and bringing it towards the New England area.
After breathing in all sorts of nastiness that doesn't belong in my lungs, I grabbed my box and a sandwich, and headed home to stay home. I finished work around 9:30 and called my sister back to help her on some Excel problem.
You best believe I solved it quickly 😤😤😤 After calling her an Excel noob (sorry Rachel), I went to pick up some groceries to make dinner. I grabbed the usual: chicken, peanut butter, raisin bread, red potatoes, and strawberries. Strawberries because 1 pound was $1.25!!??!! VALUE.
I literally had to check if the deal was right, and it was! VALUE. It was still smoky outside (not value), so I walked back home, made chicken wings in the air fryer (they are current right next to me now, still haven't taken a bite) and my value strawberries.
Looks like this week will be an inside one. At least I got these value strawberries. PLUS, the deal lasts till Thursday.
